Hello all! I am going to be at the Dufferin Grove Winter Craft Fair if you would like to come visit and see some more of my creations.

Loblolly comes from a long lineage of medicinal foragers. It is a proud duty to find the teas and herbs of which can heal his fellow creatures and ward of unwanted guests. One of the most important herbs in his trunk is the Bay leaf which is used in many of his tinctures and can be worn around the belts of journeying creatures.

Felting and Puppet Workshop

I had the priveledge of giving a workshop at the Kapisanan Philippine Centre in Kensington Market last month. My two lovely and enthusiastic students are participating in the Clutch program offered at the Kapisanan Centre. What they learned from the workshop they applied to making an almost life sized puppet to use in a film they were making in another workshop. I showed them wet felting techniques, and needle felting. We discussed the process of felt from the animal to the sliky smooth fluff on the table and ways to use reclaimed wool materials in your work. Basic puppet building techniques were also discussed. The first thing I noticed about Sien was his eyes. He could look a lion in the mouth and that lion would woo. Who wouldn't? If Sien looked me in the eyes and asked, I would follow him to the moon. When Sien realized that he was all eyes and nothing else to everyone he met, he quickly tired of ladies and lions falling in love with his gaze. He adorned himself with a red cape and hat hoping it might mask him from onlookers. He began to look down all the time. Down for days and weeks, and then months until he forgot what he looked like. Finally, Sien glimpsed his reflection in a window and found himself looking different. He had turned turquoise and his hair had grown wildly, he was all together soft and fuzzy. Sien liked his reflection. When someone asked him how he was he said, "things are looking up!"

Every morning Apple goes to work in a factory that makes ladies hats. He is quality control. Apple makes sure various feathers and ribbons are in place. He got the job because his aunt owed a favour to her sister, Apple's mother. She was worried about where Apple was so late at night. He is a singer in a band, but he doesn't like to brag about it, not even to his mom. When asked why he is green and why his hair looks the way he does he'll ask "why are you the way you are?" He writes songs about space and other places he has never been. When he comes home late at night between bars and the factory he dreams of an audience of hats. They don't sit on heads or bodies but they are there and they are "wooting" for an encore.

Maggie wouldn’t tell you but she doesn’t hear well and you have to stand in front of her when you speak so she can read your lips. Most people appreciate this kind of interaction and like Maggie a lot as a result. And the thing about Maggie is that she actually listens. It is a loving effort for her to hear. When she talks, which isn’t very often, she will make you laugh with a bad joke. Like, “an old whiskery fish went up to three young fish one morning and said ‘how’s the water?’ and then swam away. The three young fish looked at each other all perplexed and one said ‘what the hell is water?’ ” Maggie has a button where her heart is and she will tell you it’s good luck to put your index finger on it and count to three."

The Story

Mounds of inanimate material are transformed and brought to life by Jenny Kuri to become intricate and convivial textile creatures. The inspiration for Jenny's unique figures are shaped by her interpretation of the natural world. An abundance of colourful materials are used, specializing in felt. Jenny attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, and the Nova Scotia College of Art where she studied in the Material Art and Design program. She now lives and works in Toronto. Her work can be found at various shows around Toronto, and in private collections in Canada, the U.S. and Germany. Her work has been shown regularly at C1 Artspace in Toronto, at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga,the Toronto Outdoor Art Show in Nathan Phillips Square, and most recently at the One of A Kind Christmas show at the Exhibition Place. Some of Jenny's other interests include horticulture and garden design. She loves playing outdoors and is currently enrolled at the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture where she can study and explore the botanical gardens and butterfly conservatory.
